A Rendezvous with Surya

It was a hot morning in Chennai and I set out to see the coolest guy in the city - Soorya. The starkid who landed with a bang and has made everyone feel his presence ever since. We met him in the tastefully done drawing room. He was dressed in denims and checked shirt . As a token of our affection and respect we will call him SUNJI..(Soorya = sun & ji for respect). Sunji was more interested in junosino than we were in him. After exchanging pleasantries we got to business.

Juno: Starting with favourites what is your all time favourite movie?
Sunji: Well, I don't have any stable favourite. It changes with maturity. I liked Idhayathai Thirudathe, Agni Natchathiram, Apoorva Sagodharargal and now Sethu, Hey Ram.

Juno: Favourite Dish?
Sunji: Anything that is non-vegetarian .

Juno: Favourite clothes?
Sunji: I am dressed in my favourite clothes right now. I prefer casuals always.

Juno: Who was your first love?
Sunji: It was not love, but a massive infatuation. She was many years older than me. This was when I was in 8th and 9th standards.

Juno: Girl friends?
Sunji: None. I mean none of the type you ask about . I have my own circle of friends.

Juno: Tell me about your present crushes?
Sunji: None

Juno: Come on. You expect us to believe this?
Sunji: Oh yeah! This is the truth. I mean now I know what they are all made of. My exposure in my field gives no thought for any crushes. (Really? We junos are skeptic Mr.Smart guy)

Juno: How do you like to see girls ?
Sunji: (Interfering) WHAT????
Juno: V mean dressed in traditional attire or modern dress?
Sunji: uh ,u scared me.It depends on how they carry themselves and their physique. If some flabby female wears a tight jean it will be indecent. It all depends on the girl's physique. She must choose what she would look good in.
(We think Sunji 's thought's must be on Malaika)

Juno: Tell us something about your college life?
Sunji: My college days were the better part of my life. I enjoyed it to the fullest possible extent. It was all fun. My friends gang was pretty close. We always hung out together. (For babes???) Our college bunks reached historic proportions (36-26.....). By the way I did my B.com. in Loyola(completed?).

Juno: Had any on-stage experiences during your college days?
Sunji: Well, I was with the LTS - Loyola Theatre Society. I didn't actually perform in any play but did a lot of backstage and administration work.

Juno: So you weren't planning for an acting career, right?
Sunji: Yeah, you can say that.

Juno: So your entry into films was accidental?
Sunji: No, not really. I was bound to be an actor and everybody around me were with this field and to establish myself in any other area would have taken a long time because I will have had to start from scrap. But this was natural. I was hoping I would be associated with this field in some way.

Juno: Did you try any other job?
Sunji: Yeah, I did. In fact before I signed 'Naerukku naer', I was working in an export garment factory. I had been working there for nearly two years. I got the job without any influence .It helped me to learn the meaning of success and hardwork, the hard way.

Juno: Which day in your life is unforgettable?
Sunji: Two days. The day Mr.Mani Ratnam signed me for Madras Talkies' Naerukku naer and the release day of the same movie. On the former I was assured that I now have a life and career to pursue and on the latter I knew the power of the media. I understood how a three hour movie transformed a happy-go-lucky college guy into a popular hero. I'm not being proud yaar!(of course)

Juno: Had there been any incident that embarrassed you like hell?
Sunji: Yeah. I remember one incident. It's still so fresh in my memory. I was on stage during a function at my college. A lot of girls from WCC were also there. When I introduced myself, I said "I'm Soorya, 2.Com. II year ", instead of B.Com and there was one big thunder of laughter. I just went and hid myself in the last row. The thought of the incident makes me feel embarrassed even now.

Juno: Of all your fan mails, Any particular love letter that interested you?
Sunji: Nothing had interested me. But, there was a letter from a Malasiyan female . She had threatened that if I didn't accept her she would move into the house opposite to mine and see that no other girl marries me. She also wrote that she already had my thali (yours !! How??)around her neck.

Juno: Do you have any imagination about your dreamgirl; any specific qualities or features u expect her to have?
Sunji: I......would like her to be understanding, flexible, comforting , very caring and reciprocative and she would get all of these from me too.

Juno: So you are gonna get married soon.
Sunji: No, I've still got a lot of other things to do. That can wait.

Juno: Have you ever been lambasted by your parents?
Sunji: Yeah, very often. I lie a lot. But my mom is like CBI. No matter how nicely I hide things she finds out everything. She would casually ask if I went to college that day. I would instantly say yes with a big nod and somehow she would find the truth from my face. Motherly instincts huh?

Juno: Your hobbies and favourite hangouts?
Sunji: My chief hobby is watching movies. After coming to this field I'm attending gymnastics and dance classes. I frequently visit the Russian cultural Centre where they screen movies of world famous directors. Hangouts: Breakpoint in Chetpat and I love 'Gocarting'. I also like long drives and walks on the beach.

Juno: Would you care to share any of our favourite jokes?
Sunji: Sure, I'll tell you about that lady in Paris. CENSORED.......(do u know about the lady in Mexico)

Juno: Your first puff?
Sunji: I don't smoke. But, I had my first dhum for my role in Naerukku naer . I then tried one on the terrace and checked with my friends if I was smoking properly.

Juno: First peg of booze?
Sunji: I've tasted everything yaar. But I don't drink either.(liar ! liar!!) I just didn't get the habit because Pa doesn't and a lot of his friends too.

Juno: Tell us some thing about 'Love'.
Sunji: Love is a feeling. Love requires a lot sacrifices, patience, adjustments and a great amount of understanding. Love is a gradual development. Love needs to grow in you. The transformation sequence of friend, special friend, lover will be the right foundation for a sucessful love.I say all these because I have many friends who are still struggling because of love;in terms of convincing parents & convincing themselves that they had taken the right decision.I would like to stress again that the love marriage is the best with the sequence of friend ,special friend ,lover and future wife.

Juno: Will yours be a love marriage?
Sunji: I won't answer that. You assume it

Juno: (Well. We'll assume "Yes".)

Guys to all those who think actors are headstrong and proud Sunji will be a complete surprise.
It was a good time with him. ADIYOS.
